Welcome to Old San Juan!

Old San Juan Historic Neighborhood.

Old San Juan is the San Juan Municipality’s historic district. It is located on the northwest triangle of the small and narrow Islet of San Juan and joined to the Puerto Rico mainland by three bridges. Old San Juan is a National Historic Landmark (NHL), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a district listed in the U.S. government’s National Register of Historic Places (NRHP).

Founded in 1521 by Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León as a military stronghold, the 7-square-block neighborhood has evolved into a vibrant residential and commercial district featuring more than 400 carefully restored 16th- and 17th-century Spanish colonial buildings.

Old San Juan is in the San Juan Municipality—the capital of Puerto Rico and the oldest city under U.S. jurisdiction. Many U.S. banks and corporations have offices or distribution centers there, especially in the Hato Rey Area. The port of San Juan handles many cruise ships and the island’s Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.

Old San Juan has a lot to offer to residents and visitors, from wonderful monuments, museums, theaters, plazas and parks, to exciting restaurants, nightclubs and shops. More tourists visit Old San Juan each year than any other spot in the Caribbean.

With its slate blue cobblestone streets, brightly colored Spanish colonial houses, amazing historic sites and hip artistic community, Old San Juan oozes old-world romantic European charm. If you are drawn to history and art and would like to live an authentic culturally rich life by the sea, Old San Juan is for you.
